No Interest Loans (NILS) Volunteer Support Worker

    The position is on a voluntary basis, approximately 5-8 hours per week. It is desirable that any new volunteer can commit to the role for a minimum of 12 months to maximise the benefits of experience and training available in the role.

    Skills Required:
    -Excellent communication skills with the capacity to build rapport with the program's low income clients and deliver service with respect, empathy and assertiveness
    -Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to advise and liaise across all levels of the organisation and external organisations and a broad range of clients
    -An understanding of financial concepts
    -Accuracy, time management and attention to detail
    -Ability to work both collaboratively and independently as required
    -Relevant qualifications and/or experience in microfinance, the finance sector or community development would be highly regarded

DIVRS is a not-for-profit community based charitable organisation and through a variety of services provides: -Resources and support to low income Darebin residents who suffer from financial stress or crisis. Our aim is to strengthen their financial independence and increase resilience. -Programs and services which advance the education and skills development of disadvantaged and other Darebin residents. -Promotes social inclusion and strong networks through the operation of a volunteer resource service that provides opportunities for volunteer participation in the City of Darebin.

Core functions undertaken by the organisation include the provision of information, support and referral. Other services provided include tax assistance, emergency relief, Urban Food, Darebin Fruit Squad, learning to drive (L2P) Programme, Volunteer recruitment and placement. The organisation is governed by a Committee of Management who employs a Manager to be responsible for the management of the organisation.

Key Position Objective: -To provide information to clients in a confidential and impartial manner, at all times maintaining the client’s right to make their own choices and decisions, whilst operating within organisation policies, procedures and standards and the relevant government legislation, laws and acts. -To conduct NILS interviews and carry out associated administrative tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities: Interviewing: -Interviewing potential NILS applicants and processing the relevant loan documentation including doing a budget with the applicant -Discussing any limitations to the applicant (if any) and explaining procedures and time frames -Writing up of summaries of application notes and ensuring all documentation and follow-up requirements are met -To be available for interviewing duties and presentations to the NILS Committee on a regular basis -To provide accurate up-to-date information to clients by accessing organisation information resources, for example, Internet databases and/or written material. Administrative: -To accurately record details of enquires handled via case record sheets, statistical collection forms and other information collection forms as required. -To follow established administrative organisation procedures as per organisation requirements. -To contribute to the promotion and marketing of the DIVRS NILS programme
