For many years, scientific evidence has supported the powerful effect human touch and interaction can have on development and recovery from illness, however in our busy hospital environment, nurses are often so busy performing clinical duties that other tasks such as play can be forgotten or are just not possible to fit in. A large proportion of our patients have families who are unable to stay with their child overnight during admission due to work or family responsibilities.

Having a baby in the Special Care Nursery can be a very distressing time for parents and families, length of stay can vary from weeks to months depending on illness or prematurity. We understand that parents are unable to stay with their baby all the time as they have other family and work commitments or may reside in country areas. The Comfort Program Volunteer is a team of specifically trained volunteers who assist with settling and comforting babies within the Special Care Nursery.
