Do you want to help save orangutans, other Critically Endangered species, and the last rainforests of Indonesia?

The Orangutan Project is an international not-for-profit organisation working to save Critically Endangered orangutans through a broad range of holistic projects in Borneo and Sumatra.

We partner with local conservation organisations and work alongside local people and indigenous communities to safeguard Indonesia's remaining rainforests and save orangutans, elephants and tigers from extinction.

You'll take on a leadership role with our passionate, experienced volunteers, coordinating and supporting them to attend markets, festivals and other fundraising activities. You'll know you're making a real difference to fundraising across Perth and Fremantle.

Our Volunteer Coordinators play a central role in raising much-needed funds for orangutan conservation and forest protection. The role reports to and is supported by the Volunteers Fundraising Manager (VFM).

  • Research, book and set up stalls at markets and festivals
  • Coordinate volunteer rosters
  • Attend one market, festival or event per month to sell merchandise, take donations and support and lead your team of volunteers
  • Create opportunities for volunteers to meet outside formal volunteering hours in order to build a strong team bond
  • Manage, store and transport merchandise and equipment for stalls
  • Manage and bank funds raised and maintain associated records
  • Attend monthly meetings with other leaders and coordinators, the VFM and key staff (including Leif Cocks, Founder of The Orangutan Project)
  • Adhere to our policies, procedures and Code of Conduct

About you

  • You're passionate about conservation and the environment
  • You have experience in team management and leadership in a workplace environment (staff or volunteers)
  • Experience managing volunteers will be useful but is not mandatory
  • Experience volunteering in other roles will also be useful to understand how to engage and support volunteers
  • You absolutely love leading and nurturing teams and creating a sense of team bonding
  • You are available for approx eight hours per month to plan, book, manage and attend fundraising stalls
  • You are supremely organised and a great communicator - in person, on the phone, in video meetings, and via email
  • You're based in Perth and have time to attend markets and festivals one weekend per month
  • You are proactive, organised and an excellent communicator who loves getting out and about in your local community

You will receive training and support in how to talk about orangutans, the threats they face, and our work.

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!

After you’ve applied, please send a copy of your resume or brief summary of your experience to apply@orangutan.org.au, which will be sent to you in an automated message.

About The Orangutan Project

The Orangutan Project is the main brand within our parent company, Wildlife Conservation International (WCI), which also includes the International Elephant Project and International Tiger Project.

Initially founded in Australia by world-renowned primatologist Leif Cocks (OAM), we are an international wildlife conservation organisation that manages and supports holistic, grassroots projects to save Critically Endangered orangutans, tigers and elephants and safeguard the remaining rainforest ecosystems of Sumatra and Borneo.

Our holistic approach focuses on four key pillars

  1. Legally protect forests
  2. Secure, restore and patrol orangutan, elephant and tiger habitat
  3. Rescue, rehabilitate and release infant orangutans and displaced and injured orangutans, elephants and tigers
  4. Educate and empower the local communities and indigenous people

The Orangutan Project highly values our wonderful volunteers and the enormous contribution they make. Our volunteers raise much-needed funds and awareness about the urgent need for conservation and forest protection. We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
