Fishcare Volunteers
Dept Primary Industries & Regions SA - Fisheries - Fishcare Volunteers
The program is supported by the State Volunteer Coordinator and Admin Asst.
Volunteers undergo a single day training course initially, then 20 hours probation out with other volunteers, before receiving their uniform. Volunteers work in teams and go out on patrols with at least 2 people, mainly on weekends. Volunteers are expected to be able to walk down jetties and speak easily with fishers about the rules of fishing in SA. There is absolutely no compliance, just education.
Being able to speak to the public is essential, but they do not need to know all about fishing, just a willingness to learn.
Having an interest in fishing or the environment is recommended, as it makes the experience more enjoyable. Most of the skills needed are learnt during the training.
