Mentor and provide additional academic support for: students from a refugee/asylum seeker background at primary and secondary schools. adults from a refugee/asylum seeker background in conversation classes attached to primary and secondary schools

Be able to nurture student's well-being and help build self- esteem. Participate in training and commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week in a school, during school terms for one year to provide continuity for the students.We require volunteers in the following areas: Fairfield, Smithfield, Villawood and Rooty Hill.

Desirable skills: -

  • Have an interest in refugee issues and needs.
  • The ability to treat vulnerable people with respect.
  • Active listening skills and patience, especially facilitating student learning
  • Willingness to work in a classroom environment under teach guidance and direction

A current Working with Children Check will be required. Some schools require additional child safeguarding checks and the completion of child safeguarding modules in addition to the training provided by Mercy Connect.

If you are successful in your application to be a Mercy Connect volunteer and approval has been given for volunteering to begin at a school, for your protection we ask you before you enter any school campus to confirm the COVID safety protocols for the school.
