Kitchen Volunteer at OBK

Location: Our Big Kitchen, 36 Flood Street, Bondi NSW 2026
Position Type: Volunteer
About Our Big Kitchen
Our Big Kitchen (OBK) is a community-run, non-denominational, kosher-certified charity kitchen that brings people together through meaningful volunteering. We cook and pack thousands of meals every week for people doing it tough — all made possible by the incredible support of volunteers, charity partners, and our dedicated team.
We’re a vibrant, inclusive space where individuals and groups from all walks of life come to contribute, connect, and make a positive social impact.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on and community-minded Kitchen Operations Support Volunteer to support the smooth running of the kitchen and serve as a key liaison between our Onsite Operations Manager, remote team, and day-to-day kitchen activities.
This is a volunteer-facing role, perfect for someone who thrives in a busy, team-based environment and is passionate about community work. You'll help ensure the kitchen stays organised, welcoming, and safe — coordinating with volunteers, school groups, corporates, and charity partners as part of OBK’s daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Onsite Operations Manager in daily kitchen operations
- Welcome and guide volunteers, school and corporate groups during sessions
- Coordinate with OBK’s remote Kitchen Operations Support Volunteer for scheduling and updates
- Ensure proper check-in, name tags, and sign-outs for all volunteers and groups
- Monitor kitchen flow: help prepare stations and reset between events
- Assist with meal collection coordination, delivery prep and charity pickups
- Flag any incidents, maintenance issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Keep supplies, equipment, and kitchen spaces neat and ready for use
- Maintain simple records (incident forms, attendance, kitchen logs, etc.)
Ideal Candidate
- Friendly, proactive and community-minded
- Confident working with people from diverse backgrounds
- Organised, calm under pressure, and can multitask
- Hospitality, admin, or events experience is helpful but not essential
- Comfortable communicating in person and via phone or email
- Willing to follow and promote OBK’s WHS, food safety, and volunteer policies
- Willingness to learn and uphold strict HACCP and Kosher food safety standards (training provided)
- Schedule can be discussed as it usually varies M-F and Sundays (Saturdays off)
- Holds a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) or willing to obtain
- Available at least one regular weekday and open to occasional Sundays
Why Volunteer at OBK?
- Be part of a purpose-led, inclusive team that makes real impact
- Gain experience in event and kitchen operations
- Receive certificates or references based on your participation
- Get hands-on experience in community engagement
- Help create a space of kindness, teamwork and service
- Certificate can be provided upon evaluation.
