Volunteer Lawyer - Human Research Ethics Committee
The Australian Catholic University (ACU) is currently looking for volunteers to join the ACU Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) as a Category (e) member - i.e., a qualified lawyer, who may or may not be currently practising and, where possible, is not engaged to advise the institution on research-related or any other matters.
ACU is committed to fostering a research environment that promotes best practice and nurtures a culture of research integrity. The ACU Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) play a key role in this pursuit, by considering the ethics of proposed research projects. The primary role of the HREC is to safeguard the rights, safety and well-being of research participants, including from any physical, psychology, social/cultural, economic and legal risks of harm.
As a Category E member, you will bring your unique experience and expertise in ensuring that research proposals are ethical, and comply with the NHMRC's National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, ACU's Mission. You will work alongside a diverse group of academic, clinical and community members committed to protecting the dignity, rights and welfare of research participants.

Time Commitment: ACU will provide induction and training to assist new members. HREC meetings are held remotely, via Teams, 11 times per year (except January) on the second Thursday of the month, from 11am-3pm. Applications are sent to committee members two weeks before the meeting and must be reviewed before attendance. The time required to review applications will vary but generally 2 hours per application may be required. Members will also be required to attend an annual training day.
Involvement in the HREC is on a voluntary basis - ACU does not pay sitting fees to committee members.
