In supporting the deaf community in Melbourne, the Deaf Community Program Assistant provides support in group activities by addressing the needs of participants and assisting the Community Development Officer as required. This volunteer role is a great opportunity to apply Auslan skills and experience with the deaf community, so they too feel connected and supported in their journey in life.

Job Description

Key responsibilities

Activity Preparation: Prepare session resources and refreshments, as well as assist in the setting up of activity area.

During activity: With the support and guidance of the Community Development Officer, assist in the facilitation of the activities, ensuring a supportive and caring environment for all participants. Assist with managing group dynamics to ensure full enjoyment of the activity and respond to individual needs as needed.

Post activity: Assist with the packing away of furniture and equipment and kitchen clean up. Engage in confidential debrief on activity with Community Development Officer, recording any concerns and follow ups with individuals.

Administration duties: As required, assist with answering emails and calls, some data entry and referrals as guided by the Community Development Officer.

Qualifications and skills (desired/required)

Experience in relevant field highly regarded, especially those who are fluent in Auslan (native signer) or who are studying or have completed Auslan certifications (Cert IV or above) and are keen to practice. First Aid certificate also highly regarded

Understands specific issues faced by culturally diverse clients particularly in the areas of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, LGBTQIA+, CALD, neuro-diversity and multi faith, as well as those living with disability.

Communicate Effectively: Listens to others when they are speaking and asks appropriate, respectful questions; speaks at the right pace and volume for varied audiences; clarifies own understanding.

Lead Safety and Wellbeing: Identifies and follows safe work practices; takes action to address hazards, near misses and incidents.

Background check requirements

As this role involves working with people experiencing vulnerability, a police check is required.

Development opportunities with this role

This role will give volunteers an opportunity to practice Auslan and general communication in a deaf community setting, as well as gaining group facilitation and administration experience.
