Hospitality Volunteer, Jazz Behind the Green Door

St Stephen's Uniting Church

Jazz Behind the Green Door is a monthly night of jazz music in the form of a pop-up jazz club.

The music is performed by young, emerging jazz musicians at the start of their careers. All hospitality roles are filled by a team of volunteers. Jazz Behind the Green Door is a not-for-profit activity, with donations collected at the door to pay the musicians.

Hospitality is provided in the form of drinks (free wine and soft drinks) and light refreshments (free snacks and a small meal). There is a speaker who welcomes the audience during the break between sets, and gives a short ‘talk’ that aims to be welcoming, friendly and light-hearted.

The audience includes people from the local community and some tourists and visitors to Sydney. It especially caters for people who love music, but are also seeking to meet people, build new friendships, find people with shared interests, and support emerging musicians. Some of the audience are keen jazz enthusiasts who are keen to support musicians at the start of their careers; and others in the audience are newcomers to jazz music who are growing in their appreciation of jazz and improvised music.

Key Duties

Volunteers share in the following tasks according to their skills:

  • Greeting at the door and collecting donations (cash and card purchases);
  • Serving drinks at the ‘bar’ (alcoholic and non-alcoholic);
  • Serving snacks and light refreshments at the bar and to tables;
  • Chatting to audience members, and being friendly and welcoming;
  • Assisting the band and musicians;
  • Some cleaning up and packing up at the end of the evening.

Volunteers are able to join with the audience to enjoy the jazz music as their roles allow.

Volunteers should be available from 5.30 pm to 8.00 pm (two and a half hours). Jazz nights are held once a month, on the second Wednesday of that month.

This volunteer position will suit people who have time available once-a-month after work; who enjoy hospitality and helping to provide a warm, friendly atmosphere; and those who enjoy jazz music.
