About the opportunity

Primary Purpose of the Position

Cultural burning is a proud tradition with proven benefits for addressing climate change and bushfire risks. It is practiced by Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) across the South Coast of NSW with strong support from local councils and local Rural Fire Services (RFS).

There are many challenges to practicing cultural burning, including multiple stakeholders and their hierarchies, complex application of jurisdiction and authority, multiple risk management plans and policies, and a lack of meaningful Indigenous contribution to decisions.

The focus of this assignment is the unique understanding of local cultural knowledge related to cultural burning. For example, many groups/people promote themselves as cultural burns practitioners but are not from local Aboriginal communities where they promote and conduct cultural burns.

ABV will co-facilitate a workshop (date to be confirmed) where the key stakeholders and decision makers will come together with cultural burns practitioners of South Coast NSW. This will be very important for the local Indigenous community to raise awareness and highlight their concerns about cultural burning. In preparation for this workshop, there is a vital need for solid understanding of the IP around cultural knowledge from a legal perspective as well as what is being practiced.

Tasks: · Research, collate and analyse relevant data and information · Document and map out the current situation in this space. · Showcase this information in a way that is accessible for multiple and diverse stakeholders (this can be further discussed, and communications support can be provided)

Selection Criteria: Work experience and solid knowledge of IP, especially as it relates to Aboriginal issues. Ability to understand and synthesise complex information and deliver it in a practical and accessible way.
