About the National Art School The National Art School (NAS) is at the forefront of innovative arts practice utilising our distinctive studio-based teaching model to deliver exceptional higher education and research, scholarship and professional practice. NAS has a firm commitment as a 21st century art school in preparing the next generation of artists to take our stories to the world. NAS is an independent art school with an Academic Board focussed on dynamic studio-based education to enable, educate, enhance and propel students as the artists of tomorrow to shape the future of art. The National Art School is accredited through TEQSA and offers Bachelor of Fine Art, Master and Doctorate courses in Painting, Photomedia, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Printmaking, and core subjects in Drawing and Art History and Theory. We are a State Significant organisation (SSO) in NSW with a dedication to become the leading art school in the Asia Pacific.

The Volunteer Cultural Mediator Position The National Art School welcomes those with good communication skills to support front-of-house activities in our NAS Galleries. Cultural Mediation requires: • The ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and ages and direct them, as required. • An understanding of gallery access that is inclusive to all audiences, cultural awareness and an ability to cultivate an inclusive dialogue. • Commitment to the National Art School’s workplace values and code of conduct. • Interest, education, or experience in the arts and/or creative sector. • Willingness to take direction and instruction from staff. • A positive and proactive attitude. • Excellent people skills and a friendly, professional manner.

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to work in a small friendly team and learn more about the National Art School and the inner workings of a busy public art gallery. Volunteers receive special curatorial walk-throughs of exhibitions, invitations to lectures and special events, complimentary publications and library borrowing benefits.

We ask volunteers to work a minimum of one three-hour shift each fortnight and commit to the program for 12 months. Volunteer work takes place Monday to Saturday between 11am and 5pm.
