Part time Volunteer Managing Director and CEO
Bicycles for Humanity Melbourne
The Board of Bicycles for Humanity, Melbourne is seeking to appoint a new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer as our current CEO and Founder transitions away from the CEO role, while remaining involved in the organisation to mentor the incoming CEO and support key initiatives.
The MD | CEO will lead the organisation to achieve our strategic objectives, which include increasing community awareness and engagement, encouraging volunteer contribution, enhancing bicycle operations, building sustainable partnerships in Africa and creating sustainable funds. The duties listed below are indicative and there will be an opportunity for the new incumbent to define role scope and responsibilities.
The MD | CEO will lead and motivate a Leadership Team of ~10 volunteers to achieve our mission: By unlocking the value in recycled bicycles, Bicycles for Humanity Melbourne enables a sustainable model which improves access to basic human needs within African communities.
This part time, volunteer role presents a unique opportunity to lead a small but well-established and well respected not for profit in its next steps towards growth and sustainability. The MD | CEO will shape the way Bicycles for Humanity, Melbourne develops its influence and secures funding to alleviate poverty through sustainable transport in the form of a bicycle.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic leadership
- Champion Bicycles for Humanity, Melbourne’s mission and values
- Work with the Board to develop and implement the organisation’s strategy
Organisational leadership
- Oversee business operations
- Lead and motivate volunteers
- Evaluate impact of activities
- Provide a safe and healthy workplace
- Participate in bicycle packing days as able
- Ensure maintenance of deductible gift recipient (DGR) status
- Ensure that risk management processes are in place
- Ensure timely compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations
Financial leadership
- Oversee the annual budgeting process
- Lead a funding strategy to support the growth and sustainability of the organisation
- Work with the Treasurer to manage income and expenditure with appropriate processes and procedures
Stakeholder Management
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
- Oversee the development and implementation of a communication and advocacy program
- Provide regular reports to the Board, and partners as required

Essential
- Organisational leadership and management skills
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others
- High level collaboration, relationship building and networking skills
- Experience in growing and diversifying revenue
- Experience in strategic planning and reporting
- Understanding of financial management and budgeting
- Demonstrated alignment with Bicycles for Humanity, Melbourne’s mission and values
Desirable
- Experience working in the community, not for profit or charity sector
- Leadership of a volunteer program
- Experience working with and reporting directly to a board
- Experience managing grants and fundraising
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation
