ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:

LLAMA is an acronym that stands for League of Latin American Migrants Australia.

LLAMA is an educational not-for-profit organisation and registered charity which aims to provide free quality services, programs and activities that address the needs and challenges faced by the Spanish speaking communities in Australia.

We are recruiting volunteer IELTS English teachers to expand the number and range of our sessions.

ENGLISH CLASSES:

LLAMA runs different kinds of online English classes from Beginner to Upper Intermediate in the morning and evening by Zoom.

Each session lasts an hour and 15 minutes, and they are delivered in a friendly setting without the pressure of being in a classroom. This allows participants to share their experiences with other people who are in the same situation. Group sizes ranges from 5 to 20 individuals. Students are assigned to you, so there is no need to build up your own student base.

THE ROLE

The role of the IELTS Online English Teachers is to help participants to build confidence in their English language skills to pass the IELTS exam. Participants are adult migrants from 18 to 65 of age, from a Spanish background.

To participate as an IELTS English teacher volunteer, you must have an English teaching background and you should have an Australian background. It is preferred to have an Australian background to help students to be more familiar with the Australian accent and to help them understand Australian idioms, however native English speakers from different countries are welcome.

DUTIES

•Help participants to improve their abilities to speak, read, write, and understand the IELTS exam.

•Engage with participants through the use of pictures, simple texts, games, and different online resources using Zoom.

•Develop class materials based on needs, abilities, and interests of participants in consultation with English Program Volunteer Coordinator.

•Correct student mistakes either writing the correct answer via Zoom chat, or verbally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

•Participate in LLAMA meetings and Zoom app training.

•Provide the English Program Volunteer Coordinator a small comment about each session (number of participants, topic discussed, resources used) for LLAMA report purposes.

•Provide advice / feedback to the English Program Volunteer Coordinator regarding the English sessions.

•Report concerns, needs or incidents to the English Program coordinator volunteer.

•Notify the English Program Volunteer Coordinator at least 48 hours before the session when a situation comes up and you are not available for the session.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Have a degree or diploma or equivalent (teaching, linguistics, creative writing or related field).

• Have a TEFL, TESL, TESOL, or CELTA qualification or be studying towards gaining such a qualification.

• Be interested in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

• Experience developing pedagogical content or curriculum (desirable).

• Have good interpersonal and communication skills.

• Have the ability to work independently.

• Reliability is essential.

Come and get involved with the exciting and vibrant Latino community. This is a great opportunity for trainee teachers to get experience in a fun and casual environment, and for teachers who are interested in engaging with the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community or in developing skills in adult education or in teaching English as Additional Language (EAL).
