Volunteer Mentor Driver

WomenCAN is an Australian organisation based in Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula, Bendigo and Mildura whose purpose is to assist women to circuit break the cycle of disadvantage. We do this by identifying & removing barriers to womens’ participation in the work force.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Driving to Employment program will support fifty women aged 23+ from CALD backgrounds to learn to drive, including paying for up to 10hrs with a professional driving instructor, linking them with a Driver Mentor (WomenCan Australia Volunteers), paying VicRoads testing fees, and providing them with the peer support needed to succeed.

Volunteer Driver Mentors will be required to spend one - two hours per week with a learner driver. The mentoring session times will need to be negotiated between the Volunteer Mentor, the Learner Driver and the Project Manager. Volunteer Mentors and Learner Drivers will be matched based on compatibility, location and availability.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To assist female learner drivers in gaining supervised, on the road, practical driving experience.
  • To develop and maintain a purposeful, empowering, supportive and ongoing relationship with a woman from diverse backgrounds throughout the duration of the program.
  • Act in the role of a supervising driver and help the learner driver gain practical driving experience prior to going for their probationary licence (Green P's).
  • Build a positive relationship with the learner driver, be a positive role model and provide non-judgmental support to the learner driver.
  • Meet with the matched learner driver regularly for driving sessions.
  • Provide regular feedback to Project Manager on the progress of the learner driver and the program.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Aged 25 years and over and hold a current full Victorian licence
  • Live in the Mildura, Bendigo or Melbourne Metro regions
  • Have a minimum 6-month commitment to the program
  • Provide a minimum of 1 hour driving session per week to the program
  • Have good communication skills including a willingness to listen and learn
  • Have ability to motivate and inspire women from diverse backgrounds
  • Have self-awareness, compassion, empathy and reliability
  • Be willing to obtain a National Police Check and Driver History Report
  • Desirable but not required: Ability to speak community languages
