Committee of Management

Avenue Neighbourhood House @ Eley

Committee of Management member

Avenue Neighbourhood House @ Eley (ANH@E) is a vibrant and strong Neighbourhood House based in Blackburn South that has been operating for over 37 years. We are the only not-for-profit Registered Training Organisation operating within the City of Whitehorse, specialising in the provision of accredited educational courses for people with low literacy and numeracy skills.

Our courses are designed to help learners gain the confidence and skills needed to look for a job or go on to further study. In addition, ANH@E provides an extensive range of low-cost social and recreational activities such as yoga, strength training, poetry, dancing, singing, music, line dancing, and creative writing. We also operate a large occasional early learning centre 5-days a week.

We use the community development model of practise that encourages community participation and development of partnerships/networks to address disadvantage and social exclusion/isolation.

ANH@E is managed by a volunteer committee of management, has a staff of 21 part-time workers, and many more casual tutors. The House is strongly reliant on volunteers, and we currently have over 20 volunteers who drive our community bus, maintain our garden, clean our kitchen, assist in class rooms, and provide reception/administrative support.

AHN@E has one vacancy on our Committee of Management (CoM) due to the retirement of members. To fulfill our governance obligations as a Neighbourhood House we strive to make our committee inclusive and as representative of our diverse community as possible.

We are seeking expressions of interest from enthusiastic individuals with a range of interests and life experiences who want to make a difference and be involved in an extremely fulfilling community role.

Potential candidates will have: • an interest in helping in a community organisation. • a desire to learn about and further the work of ANH@E. • time to participate in 10 monthly CoM meetings (about two hours each). • willingness to support staff and volunteers with skills and advice where required. • a desire to be part of a team in a respectful and supportive environment.

In line with our regulatory and governance obligations, committee members are required to undergo Working With Children and National Police checks, and complete a Fit & Proper Person Declaration. Whilst no specialist skills are required, financial and/or legal skills will be welcomed.

Please consider becoming a member of ANH@E’s Committee of Management – it’s fun, rewarding, and gives you new skills and experience in a dynamic and supportive environment whilst making a great contribution to your community.

All are welcome to apply - your diversity is our strength.
