Life in Community Volunteer - Inner Melbourne

Wellways Australia Limited

About the opportunity

The LinC Volunteer Program are looking for new team members with good local knowledge from the local community, enabling many varied opportunities for community connection.

As a volunteer, you will be assisting participants in the areas of social connection, inclusion and engagement and supporting them to link in with a range of social and community networks. You will also be facilitating the development of social connections and encourage the support of other community members to be inclusive.

Volunteers will be guided by the participant they're matched with to find out what community means to them. This is a role in which you can draw on your own life experiences to encourage and empower people to live independent, active lives in line with their own goals and interests.

A day in this role may see you assisting with social inclusion by supporting people in a range of activities, such as catching public transport, exploring or rediscover different interests or hobbies, learning how to use the internet and social networking sites, joining social interest groups and building confidence in getting to know their local area, such as the gym, neighbourhood house, library, parks, art galleries and walking paths.

Meetings between the volunteer and the participant happen weekly or fortnightly for one to two hours per meeting.

We require a minimum 3 month commitment from volunteers.

About the program

The Life in Community (LinC) volunteer program provides volunteer support for up to three months to people who experience mental health challenges in their recovery journey to engage with their local community.

Volunteers will undergo various checks and training, including but not limited to:

  • One on one interview with Volunteer Coordinator
  • National Police Check (Wellways will pay for this)
  • One reference check (personal or professional)
  • Working With Children Check (free for volunteers)
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module (online and free)
  • Compulsory training (one day initial training)
  • Provide a COVID booster vaccination certificate or valid medical exemption
