Telephone Information Service Volunteer Phone Consultant

Job Watch Inc

JobWatch is recruiting volunteers as phone consultants on our Telephone Information Service (TIS). Our phone consultants speak to callers on the TIS about the situations they are experiencing at work and provide relevant legal information about their options.

Typical scenarios where people might call us include where they have been underpaid at work, unfairly dismissed from their employment, or where they have experienced bullying or discrimination in the workplace. If you're passionate about helping the most vulnerable workers in Australia, this is the volunteer role for you!

What are we looking for?

  • MUST be a law student/graduate/practising lawyer;
  • A keen interest in employment law/antidiscrimination law;
  • High level of communication skills;
  • High level of self-motivation;
  • Ability to prioritise own workload;
  • Willing and able to speak to the Telephone Information Service callers;
  • A sensitivity to different political/cultural/ethnic backgrounds and a respect for multiculturalism;
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Strong commitment to social justice and human rights.

Priority is generally given to those who have experience or an interest in employment, antidiscrimination and equal opportunity law. Any customer service experience is also looked upon favourably.

Key benefits:

  • Strong grounded knowledge of practical applications of employment law
  • Hands-on learning, direct contact with clients
  • One-on-one supervision with qualified lawyers
