Short Back & Sidewalks (SBSW) is a growing Australian not-for-profit celebrated for its contribution to the community. We provide haircuts free of charge and free of judgement to members of the community in need. Our service goes beyond just giving free haircuts; we create meaningful connections through conversations with clients and create visibility for some of the most marginalised community members in Australia.

We are looking for a New South Wales state based manager who will ensure we deliver a safe, reliable and collaborative wrap around service. You will plan, direct and coordinate our local Sydney services engaging directly with our volunteer haircutters and the service provider partners we collaborate with. We are looking for a self-starter who can work within a defined Operations Strategy to re-establish and enhance our services in Sydney.

Reporting Structure: This position reports to the SBSW National Operations Manager.

Peers: State Manager SA, State Manager WA, State Manager VIC, Operations/Service Coordinators SA/WA/VIC

Reports: Sydney frontline volunteers (Service Facilitators, Operations Coordinator), Onboarding Lead

The State Manager is responsible for delivering the following responsibilities to the National Operations Manager:

  1. Management of NSW Operations and Onboarding teams.
  2. Safe and reliable services, including implementation of effective risk management and maintaining adequate volunteer base to deliver a consistent and high-quality service
  3. Incident management
  4. Effective collaboration between NSW Operations and Onboarding teams
  5. Key Performance Indicators (haircuts, volunteer activity etc)

Key deliverables of the role include (by self or delegated):

  1. Operations

1.1. Engage service locations under instruction by National Operations Manager to enable weekly haircutting services

1.2. Ensure full attendance of cutters and other volunteers at each service

1.3. Engage with volunteers pre and post service

1.4. Conduct post service debrief with volunteers to identify issues or improvement opportunities

1.5. Ensure active use of volunteer management system (Volaby) to schedule and manage services (rostering etc.)

1.6. Reminding volunteers about upcoming services ensuring we have appropriate coverage

1.7. Capture KPI’s

  1. Onboarding

2.1. Oversee the onboarding and recruitment team to ensure volunteers are successfully brought into SBSW services in a timely fashion

2.2. Engage Volunteers creating an active community

2.3. Ensure role specific information is communicated to new volunteers for cutters and photographers

2.4. Identify regular active volunteers to serve our client base

2.5. Ensure accurate records are captured and stored for Covid 19 vaccination status, qualifications, working with children (if applicable)

2.6. Recontact volunteers regularly to increase activity

2.7. Monitor the Volaby database for inactive volunteers and follow up on their status to delete inactive volunteers
