School Holiday Programs Assistant
Vision AustraliaAs part of Children and Young People Client Services, we are seeking a volunteer to perform tasks that will aid our School Holiday Programs for children that are blind or have low vision.
This will include assisting with the set up, pack up and running of the groups and to allow staff to have short breaks throughout the day.
The volunteer will perform sighted guide techniques to effectively support our young clients to safely navigate their environment.
Our School Holiday Programs run under the following schedule:

School Holiday Programs – 3 groups

Running on various days throughout each school holidays

Usually run out of Vision Australia Kooyong, with one day being an excursion into the community

Some activities are planned to run out of Vision Australia Kensington in 2023 e.g. Woodwork Workshops

Age groups 5 – 9 years; 10 – 14 years; 15 – 18 years

Groups can vary from 5 hours to 7.5-hour day

Groups are facilitated by Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Pathologist, Orientation & Mobility Instructor, Counsellor

Some activities that children engage in include blind sports, Lego building, craft, Mindfulness activities, cooking, shopping, team games, Orientation & Mobility activities

Excursions include going to the MCG, MRC, Science works
Essential Skills and Knowledge
The volunteer demonstrates:
• Preferably relevant education and/or experience working with children or young people aged 0 to 18 years
• Must relate positively with parents, staff and children at all times
• Maintain a friendly, but professional attitude with young people
• Good clear communication and interpersonal skills
• Be able to work independently once oriented to tasks
