Community Journalist/Writer
The Westsider Community NewspaperKey Duties: Write one article per month (preferably buy one-off and less frequent contributions are fine), of 300 to 500 words (pref. with photos/images) about what interests/inspires you about the West of Melbourne. We have monthly theme for each edition which may motivate you (eg. Arts/Culture, Comedy, History, Environment, Innovation, Diversity, Food and Wine, Sports and Wellbeing etc. but the topic (as long as it somehow relates to the West, even if it's just the fact that you live there) is really up to you. We're particularly looking for regular 'columnists' who want to develop their writing skills in their chosen way and contribute as a feature of the paper.
Skills and Experience:
You don't need specific skills and experience, but a high level of literacy in English and a confident writing style is preferred. We have many contributors who have never written for a publication before and grow in confidence as they get experience.
This role would be perfect for residents of the West who might:
- have always wanted to write and be published
- have (or are getting) education or training in writing, journalism or communications
- want to develop their writing and community engagement skills
- have a passion for the West and particularly the empowering and inclusive nature of our diverse community
- have a passion for a topic (somehow) related to the West that you'd like to share
- want to be a part of a passionate, good-willed team that believes in the power of community.
Many volunteer writers/contributors have found this role to be one of the most meaningful and fulfilling activities in their life, as they get to actively engage with their locals and community to celebrate and enhance it. The benefits of volunteering are manifold, but many Westsider contributors share that it provides a structure and support base to encourage them to be active in their community in a very meaningful way; by sharing and celebrating our wonderful West. They may also use it as an opportunity to connect with like-minded, community-spirited creatives (work is in your own time online, but we have a monthly in-person free drinks celebration for the edition and a Facebook Group Page to keep in touch), and develop their curiosity and passion for their own home and its immense diversity and uniqueness.
