Key tasks and responsibilities

Safety: Apply your electrical test and tagging qualification to ensure the highest standards to the safe operation of donated electrical items, or the safe disposal of items which are not of saleable condition. Along with your team, ensure customers, visitors, you and your team are kept safe by always adhering to safe work practices. Keep children safe by always abiding by Salvation Army’s child safe policies and code of conduct. Help ensure safety equipment and the staff areas and amenities are kept clear of hazards and are tidy and clean.

Team work: Assist by helping customers carry their items to the electrical item inspection area where required. Bring along your ideas, suggestions and concerns to the regular team meetings and join in on celebrations and special occasions.

Qualifications and skills (desired/required)

This role requires volunteers to have Test and Tag qualifications from a Registered Training Organisation, or

Have an electrical or restricted electrical licence

As this role is demands a high level of safe practice and has access to potentially valuable equipment, volunteers are required to undergo a Police Check.

Training Requirements

One of the many ways we care for people is by ensuring our workers are well equipped with the necessary knowledge to complete their role safely.

To successfully undertake this role, the following training is required2

Category A training: Foundational training which includes an introduction to The Salvation Army, code of conduct training, work-safe and child-safe practices.

Work Health and Safety (WHS) considerations

We take Work Health Safety and well-being seriously at The Salvation Army. We want to ensure volunteers are fully informed and aware of key safety considerations. For this role, key considerations include (but not limited to):

Long periods of sitting, standing or leaning will mean Test and Taggers will be required to take regular breaks.

As this role can be hazardous when dealing with electrical items it is imperative to always be alert and aware of surroundings and apply best electrical safety practices at all times. The electrical testing area must be kept neat and tidy with special attention to thoroughfares and cords.

As there may be some lifting of heavy items, appropriate use of lift and transport aids such as a trolley, or seeking assistance from a team member is required, and closed-toe work shoes must be worn at all times.

It is important to ensure the Portable Appliance tester’s calibration is up to date and in safe working order.

This role requires up to date COVID vaccination.

Other WHS considerations will be covered during the induction.

Development opportunities with this role

This role will give volunteers an opportunity to develop skills and build experience in portable appliance testing, team work, leading an area of expertise and working in a retail environment.
