The issue we’re working to address

In Cambodia, there has been an alarming increase in the reports of sexual exploitation – including online sexual exploitation – of adolescent girls. Largely fueled by harmful social norms, girls face severe gender disparities and barriers that limit their ability to stay in school, make their own decisions and protect themselves. This gender inequality forms a complex and reciprocating cycle of injustice for girls, perpetuating (and perpetuated by) welfare concerns, poor mental health and relationships, and lack of quality education in order to access equitable job opportunities.

Adolescent girls are also expected to support their caregivers in maintaining the household and caring for sick family members, leaving them at increased risk of dropping out of school.

The COVID-19 pandemic has now amplified inequalities for girls, creating circumstances that increase their risks. AusCam is working to protect girls and ensure their ability to have opportunity, choices and freedom.

AusCam Freedom Project is a high-impact organisation registered with the ACNC. We prevent sexual exploitation and trafficking in Cambodia, by protecting girls at high risk, using a strong case management approach, education and empowerment. We identify girls at risk, provide crisis intervention and improve their resilience and their resistance to trafficking for the future. You can find out more about us at our website (auscam.org).
