Lifeline offer 24/7 Phone Service to the Australian community, and this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of people like you. Phone volunteering as a Crisis Supporter may be right for you at Lifeline Ballarat, especially if you enjoy the one-on-one interaction you get from a phone conversation and if you like to learn best with others.

###What does being a Crisis Supporter volunteer take?

Commitment: the journey to completing your training over a few months (dependent on your agreed timeline) and to ongoing hours as a volunteer.

Responsibility: supporting others means being able to step in and work with someone in crisis

Travel from time to time: Transport to and from our Lifeline Centre in Mount Pleasant

Availability: A minimum of four volunteer hours per fortnight

Tech skills: Basic computer skills and access to a reliable computer and internet - including a working camera and microphone

Financial contribution: the training is subsidised by donors; however, we ask for a financial commitment toward paying for some of the training costs. Scholarships may also be available.

What does a Crisis Supporter volunteer do?

Undergo comprehensive training- After completing our intake process, you will sign up for training to become a qualified Crisis Supporter.

Respond - You will respond to people in need of support via phone, from our Lifeline Centre.

Listen - You will listen to what is going on for the person who has contacted you, hear their story, and sit with their distress.

Empower - you will support the person to identify their next steps and encourage them to generate and own the action. If needed, you will create a safety plan with them.

What are the requirements?

  • You will gain a Crisis Supporter qualification, enabling you to volunteer on the phone.

  • Be over the age of 18 and an Australian or New Zealand citizen or have a valid visa with no study restrictions

  • Police Check and Working with Children Check

  • Attendance at an online Information and Selection Interview (Zoom) is mandatory.

  • A payment towards the cost of the nationally accredited Crisis Support Workplace Training course. Please let us know if you would like to explore our payment plan or scholarship options
