Outline of the role:

The Cancer Council Information Service (CCIS) volunteer is responsible for providing support and information to people affected by cancer and health professionals within Royal North Shore Hospital. This includes linking patients and carers to Cancer Council support services and resources.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Informing and providing people within Royal North Shore Hospital of Cancer Council services and resources available to them.
  • Keep up to date on the services and resources provided by Cancer Council to ensure accurate information is provided.
  • Attend all training sessions provided by both Cancer Council and Royal North Shore Hospital to maintain volunteer status.
  • Make use of tablets provided in promoting and referring to Cancer Council services. Training on how to use this technology is provided and a contact number available for support during business hours.
  • Enter deidentified data onto the provided tablet for each interaction.
  • Complete stocktake of booklets and other materials within the treatment centre and ordering publications when needed.
  • Taking part in evaluation surveys and representing CCNSW in collated surveys on an ad hoc basis.
  • Remain informed of and comply with relevant policies and procedures of both the (treatment centre) and CCNSW.
  • Respecting the privacy and confidentiality of others.
  • Treat all personal information acquired as confidential.
  • Avoid giving medical advice, including alternative therapies.
  • Wear the supplied uniform and identification badges.

Our ideal volunteer will have:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Desire to help others
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about CCNSW services and services provided by other organisations
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Familiarity with computers and electronic tablets or a willingness to learn these skills
  • Willingness to undergo a National Criminal History Check (cost covered by CCNSW) and a Working With Children Check (free for volunteers)
  • Keep required vaccinations up to date as per the Department of Health policy
  • Commitment to attend all provided training and debrief sessions, as well as team meetings

Desirable:

  • Some previous experience with cancer, ie: have had cancer personally or involved with a family member/friends diagnosis.
