The program

Our Migration Support Programs provide help and support to refugees, asylum seekers, immigration detainees and other people who are vulnerable as a result of migration.

We do this through a range of migration programs services and programs that protect and uphold the health, dignity and wellbeing of vulnerable migrants. We also provide services to reconnect family members whose loss of contact is caused by international or internal conflict, war and disaster.

The Australian Red Cross Immigration Detention Monitoring Program (IDMP) conducts regular and frequent independent monitoring of immigration detention facilities across Australia.  Our team focuses on issues of humanitarian concern, which means that we observe the conditions of detention and the treatment of people in detention. We aim to ensure that their health, dignity, and wellbeing is being upheld and protected. The IDMP team then raises issues of humanitarian concern relating to people in detention with the Australian Government, making recommendations that promote respect for humanitarian values, meet humanitarian needs and adhere to relevant domestic and international standards for detention.

The opportunity

Volunteer Program Officers provide ongoing program and administrative support to Lead Humanitarian Observers and the Coordinator of the IDMP.  This may involve helping to prepare for quarterly visits as well as helping with data entry, record management, and other administrative tasks after the visit. Volunteer Program Officers may also provide research assistance to support humanitarian diplomacy efforts and inform the development of reports relating to immigration detention.

This role requires volunteers with experience in administration and record management, have strong attention to detail, be confident in working with digital databases, and possess strong oral and written communication skills, communicating sensitive and complex information.

The impact

As a Migration Support Programs volunteer, you’ll help improve the wellbeing of people suffering vulnerability as a result of migration. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
