Report Writer | Youth Representative to the UN Program

Purpose

The Report Writer of the Youth Representative Program assists with writing and editing content and sections of the Youth Representative Report, released at the end of 2022 to outline the operations and insights gathered by this year’s Youth Representative, Angelica Ojinnaka.

In this position, the Report Writer will assist Angelica and the Program’s executive, Igor Andonov (Chief Youth Representation Officer) write content about the Program’s ongoing operations. These operations include specific consultation events, Youth Rep events and attendance at external events, media engagements, and other specialised activities. The main intention of this content is to highlight the various ways the Youth Representative engages with young people and the community. Some of this content may also be repurposed for immediate sharing on social media and UN Youth’s blog space. Content about the insights gathered from young people (e.g. Top 10 Issues) will be written at the conclusion of consultations this year.

We believe this position is ideal for young people wishing to engage in journalism, communications, publishing, editing, and public relations.

UN Youth Australia is a youth for youth not-for-profit organisation. This volunteer position is available for young people 17 to 25 (inclusive), who are not in high school, and are eligible to hold a Working With Children Check (or equivalent).

Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

As the Report Writer of the Youth Representation Portfolio at UN Youth Australia, you will help by performing the following duties:

  • Collect a range of information sources (recaps, speeches, photographs, videos) to inform the conceptualisation of content pieces;
  • Write content that accurately summarises and explains an engagement, including the underlying intention for the engagement;
  • Collaborate with internal departments (Communications Portfolio) and external stakeholders to write collaborative pieces of content;
  • Advise Youth Representative team members on content requirements for reporting on engagements;
  • Assist the Youth Representative with maintaining an engaging and thoughtful presence within the community;
  • Other writing and editorial related duties as directed by the Youth Representative and the Chief Youth Representation Officer.

Skills, qualifications or experience desirable for role

We are looking for a volunteer with the following skills, qualifications or experience to fill this volunteer role:

  • An ability to write copy for a range of texts, with accurate reporting and an interesting narrative. Graphical design skills will also aid in understanding format and composition.
  • The ability to convey information to different audiences with different priorities and levels of concern;
  • Proven interpersonal skills, professional communication, and time management skills;
  • An interest in the representation of all young people in Australia, including a passion to accurately represent their experiences and identities; and
  • An understanding of strategic plans, priorities and directions.

Supervision

The Report Writer will be supervised by the Youth Representation Portfolio’s executive, Igor Andonov (Chief Youth Representation Officer). The lead will however volunteer closely and be directed by the Youth Representative, Angelica Ojinnaka.

Safety, Accountability, and Background Checks

As part of our commitment to child safety, we require certain checks to be conducted. All volunteers must obtain a Volunteer (often free) Working with Children Check (WWCC) (or equivalent) in their respective State or Territory. Depending on their scope of operations, they may be required to obtain WWCCs in other state and territories. We will also collect and verify two references as a mandatory part of the application confirmation process. We will let you know when you need to provide this information.
