Development Officer | Youth Representative to the UN Program

Purpose

The Development Officer of the Youth Representative Program assists with sourcing financial and external support (partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations) to support and extend the operations of the Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations.

This year, the Development Officer will be volunteering closely with Angelica Ojinnaka (2022 Youth Rep) and the Program’s executive, Igor Andonov (Chief Youth Representation Officer) to acquire and build support for Youth Representative operations. The Officer will help source financial support and contributions to broaden the capabilities of the Program, including reaching more young people around Australia through our consultations. In conjunction with plans for new consultation formats, your assistance will be invaluable as we communicate with governments, private businesses, and community organisations in every state and territory.

We believe this position is ideal for young people wishing to engage in event planning, business development, strategy and growth, consulting, and management.

UN Youth Australia is a youth for youth not-for-profit organisation. This volunteer position is available for young people 17 to 25 (inclusive), who are not in high school, and are eligible to hold a Working With Children Check (or equivalent).

Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

As the Development Officer of the Youth Representation Portfolio at UN Youth Australia, you will help by performing the following duties:

  • Communicating with external stakeholders, such as governments, large corporations and small to medium businesses, and community organisations, to coordinate growth opportunities for the Youth Representative Program;
  • Identifying, and where applicable creating, a value proposition within the Youth Representative Program and its operations that appeal to various stakeholders;
  • Such include creating prospectuses and pitch documentation for external consumption;
  • Identifying, applying, and securing financial and in-kind grants;
  • Encouraging and promoting donations, including the possibility of organising in-person fundraising events;
  • Assisting the Youth Representative with maintaining an engaging and thoughtful presence with the industry and community;
  • Other development related duties as directed by the Youth Representative, the Chief Youth Representation Officer, and the Chief Development Officer.

Skills, qualifications or experience desirable for role

We are looking for a volunteer with the following skills, qualifications or experience to fill this volunteer role:

  • The ability to manage a project across time and with multiple stakeholders;
  • The ability to understand various stakeholders and their unique needs and understanding, and related that back to Program operations;
  • The ability to convey information to different audiences with different priorities and levels of concen;
  • Proven interpersonal skills, professional communication, and time management skills;
  • An interest in the representation of all young people in Australia, including a passion to accurately represent their experiences and identities; and
  • An understanding of strategic plans, priorities and directions.

Supervision

The Development Officer will be supervised by the Youth Representation Portfolio’s executive, Igor Andonov (Chief Youth Representation Officer). The lead will however volunteer closely and be directed by the Youth Representative, Angelica Ojinnaka, and UN Youth Australia’s Chief Development Officer, Rose Bourke.

Safety, Accountability, and Background Checks

As part of our commitment to child safety, we require certain checks to be conducted. All volunteers must obtain a Volunteer (often free) Working with Children Check (WWCC) (or equivalent) in their respective State or Territory. Depending on their scope of operations, they may be required to obtain WWCCs in other state and territories. We will also collect and verify two references as a mandatory part of the application confirmation process. We will let you know when you need to provide this information.
