The program

Red Cross has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914. We are committed to strengthening and extending our emergency aid services to assist all Australians in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies.

As a Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to choose from different styles of volunteering: Response, or Preparedness, Trainer (or all three!).

Response Volunteers are rostered to be on-call if an emergency response is required. If you are activated (called to respond) to an emergency on a day you are rostered, it is expected that you will be able to attend within 90 minutes.

Preparedness Volunteers are involved in preparing communities, groups and individuals before emergencies, as well as assisting with disaster recovery.

Trainer/facilitator Volunteers will work with Emergency Staff to train volunteers, community services providers and local councils in preparedness, psychological first aid, response, emergency management and recovery.

The opportunity

All our Volunteers need to be reliable, possess good interpersonal skills and have the ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Further to this, you will have the following mindset and skills:

A passion to volunteer for a humanitarian organisation Ability to work effectively as part of a team Personal experience in managing stressful, emotional and/or adverse situations Understanding of, and respect for, privacy, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries While working in your local community, Emergency Services Volunteers may also have the opportunity to work with other communities throughout NSW and interstate.

Training will be provided which will develop your skills and knowledge to effectively drive Red Cross Emergency Services work, as well as empower you with the ability to make a real difference in the lives of people before, during and after emergencies.

We will be holding an information session on Monday 16th May from 5.30-7.30 pm.  This will be a great opportunity for you to connect with the team and to ask questions about the role.  Further details will be provided upon application.

The impact

As a Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer, you will have an impact on the ground in your communities. Whether it’s leading preparedness workshops or pillowcase presentations in schools, training volunteers or community service providers,  providing Personal Support (Psychological First Aid) to people affected by emergencies, or helping communities recover after a disaster, you will be making a real difference in the lives of people before, during and after emergencies.

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.
