MORE DETAILS: Motor Neurone Disease (MND; aka. ALS, Lou Gerhigs, and/or Charcot’s Disease) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disease. There is no cure for MND; therefore, symptomatic management addressed by a multidisciplinary team is required including Speech Pathology services. To address the complex communication needs experienced by people with MND, MND Queensland has launched the first MND-specific Speech Pathology service. A vital part of Speech Pathology Services for this population is voice banking. Voice banking is the digitization of one’s voice when speech is still intelligible. As MND progresses, speech intelligibility is likely to deteriorate rapidly and in some cases people with MND are unable to use speech to meet their communication needs. As such, voice banking gives people with MND the option to access a synthetic version of their voice on a high-technology alternative and augmentative communication device, helping them preserve a sense of identity. However, people with MND have anecdotally reported difficulty accessing and/or using the equipment and technology needed to complete voice banking leading to frustration and failure to complete the voice banking process. Therefore, MND Queensland is launching the first voice banking clinic for people with MND in Australia. The goal of the voice banking clinic is to provide easy access to and seamless completion of voice banking. People with MND will be able to access the clinic at our offices in Oxley or in the comfort of their own homes through our mobile service. They will be provided with equipment needed and support to complete the voice banking process free of charge. Therefore, we require four mature student volunteers who are interested in learning about and implementing voice banking to help run the clinic. Volunteers will be provided all equipment, trained in the use of the equipment and software, and will be compensated for any travel. Furthermore, volunteers will have flexibility in scheduling voice banking appointments around their schedule. If you are interested in this great opportunity to further develop your speech pathology skills and help people with MND.
