The Ankali Project is a NSW Health Volunteer program that provides social and emotional support to lonely and isolated people living with HIV.

Clients of the program have shared that their volunteers are as important to their wellbeing as their GPs. Colleagues in the health service say that volunteers provide invaluable support to clients because volunteers can do things with and for clients, and share things that health professionals can’t- which is to show clients that they belong in society, and are cared for.

Volunteering with the Ankali Project means that you are matched one- on- one with your client, a socially isolated person living with HIV. Your volunteer work is about providing social support, and emotional support. Social support is about being social with your client- catching up over coffee, going for a walk, seeing them at home, or going to a movie. It varies! The emotional support is about building rapport and trust with your client, listening to them without judgement, and showing empathy. A minimum 6 month commitment is required.

You receive 3 days of compulsory Ankali Volunteer Training at commencement, before seeing a client. On an ongoing basis, you get support at fortnightly Volunteer Support meetings. Volunteers are required to attend the training in order to qualify to volunteer.

The Ankali Project is currently receiving volunteer applications and enrolments for our upcoming Volunteer Training. You’ll be invited to a Volunteer Briefing session on Friday February 2nd, 2024. You can hear more about what volunteering is like, and how you are supported as a volunteer.

Compulsory Volunteer Training course takes place on: Saturday March 16 Sunday March 17 Saturday March 23.

100 attendance at all three days is required for you to graduate from the Volunteer Training.

Benefit: Providing meaningful support to those with HIV.
