Since 1987 the Aboriginal Community Elders Services (ACES) has been first organization of its kind in Victoria. ACES is located in Brunswick East Melbourne. ACES is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that supports and advocates for the Aboriginal community Elders. Our team are committed to the organisation’s vision and values; advocates for our Elders and other vulnerable community members; and shows respect for, observance and compliance with Aboriginal cultural protocols, practice and ceremony. Purpose of role The Planned Activity Group (PAG) program provides internal and external activities for Elders/PAG participants along with Young People with Disability by creating art and craft such as mosaic and drawing, excursions to places of interest including Bunjilaka Museum, trip to the beach, Music workshops, wellbeing activities with light exercise, Hydrotherapy, basic computer skills course, bowling and more. Volunteers will assist under the direction of PAG officer, PAG Assistant to provide group activities internal the facilities and external, needs of our clients.

SUPERVISON : The Volunteer coordinator will supervise volunteers, and provide ongoing support, with focused supervision to be provided by PAG officers co-ordinating the tasks being undertaken by the volunteer.

VOLUNTEER KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : -assisting with the transportation of PAG clients to and from the facility and off-site excursions -COVID screening of each participant of the PAG group upon pick up -setting up and packing down program areas -interacting with clients and keeping them engaged with their activities -assisting with serving lunch (meals prepared by kitchen) and cleaning up after -assisting Elders with their mobility needs

ABOUT YOU : Skills:

  • An understanding of the issues faced by people living with disability
  • A demonstrated interest in Aboriginal culture and people
  • A personable attitude well suited to communicating with people with a CALD (culturally or linguistically diverse background)
  • An ability to understand and be patient and compassionate about clients’ needs

Experience (preferred but not required) :

  • A background in social work or study
  • A background in interacting with Aboriginal people and people living with disability.
  • Experience in a group learning setting

Qualifications :

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • Full Driver’s License
  • A police check (must be current)
  • A brief resume outlining prior experience with two references
  • Documents showing you have had both a current influenza shot and full Covid 19 vaccination including booster.

DESIRABLE :

  • Food Handling
  • Basic first aid
  • Cert III in aged care
