Peer Support Group Coordinator

Empower Autism
Logo for Empower Autism

At Empower Autism our vision is for autistic people to live with confidence and self-belief. Our mission is to empower them to reach their potential through providing programs and services based on inclusiveness, self-development, and self-advocacy. We are proud to run several support groups throughout South-East Queensland to support and empower autistic people and their carers and loved ones.

We are seeking expressions of interest for the role of Volunteer Peer Support Group Coordinator – Adult Group. Our Adult Peer Support Group provides a safe and friendly environment for autistic adults (aged 30 years and above) to meet others, share stories, form friendships and to feel accepted by peers. It also provides an opportunity to learn more about living with autism, discuss strategies to manage challenges and to celebrate strengths and successes.

The group is a self-help, structured discussion group which meets in the evening twice a month at our Virginia Centre. As the Coordinator, your role will be to present and guide discussions on the week’s topics. This is an engaging role that provides an opportunity to share your strengths and empower others to share theirs.

Ideally you will have lived experience of autism, an understanding of group facilitation, strong interpersonal skills and a reasonable knowledge of current issues, history and trends in autism. You must be available evenings between 6.30 and 9.30 twice a month. Training and support will be provided. You’ll need to have the appropriate clearances (Blue Card, NDIS Worker Screening and National Police Check) and we will assist you through this process.

Empower Autism started as a small support group for parents of children with Asperger’s and we’ve been helping autistic individuals and families since 1994. We believe in peer led support and most of our volunteers have direct ‘lived’ experience with autism. We value our volunteers; they play a vital role in delivering on our mission. We are always looking for talented people who are driven to make a positive impact on the lives of others. If this is you please contact us regarding this role or to find out about other volunteer opportunities available.
