Volunteer Mentors, Freelancers, and Event Helpers - Leading Youth Forward

Leading Youth Forward
Logo for Leading Youth Forward

Now in its 11th year of operation, Leading Youth Forward (LYF) is a completely volunteer-run organisation which provides a structured mentoring and development program to around 80 at-risk Perth teens in years 7 to 10. Teens are carefully matched with a mentor who provides one-on-one support and encouragement to build confidence, nurture personal growth and positively influence their teen at a critical stage in their life.

Being a mentor with Leading Youth Forward (LYF) is an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. Not only will you make a huge difference to the life of an at-risk teenager, but LYF is also a fantastic opportunity to meet new, like-minded people and have a ridiculously good time.

We recruit all volunteers in January of each year.

MENTORS

As a mentor, you'll be carefully matched with a teen for the year and will attend a weekend camp and four Big Day Out events together. These events enable you and your teen to take part in a diverse range of fun and challenging activities that help build a trusting relationship as well as provide exciting opportunities your teen may otherwise not have had.

As a mentor, the commitment we ask of you is:

  • Attend one 3-hour training session in mid-February 2022;
  • Attend a weekend camp in March; and
  • Attend at least three out of our four Big Day Out events – we provide these dates well in advance to allow you to plan ahead.

For Big Day Out events you'll need to:

  • Pick-up and drop-off your teen from their home or an agreed meeting point;
  • Confirm details and pick-up and drop-off times with your teens parent / guardian; and
  • Make sure that your teen has some of the best days of their year!

Mentors are also encouraged to proactively arrange small group activities with their teen and other teen/mentor pairs on weekends or school holidays to further develop the mentoring relationship. This is optional, but definitely helps build more successful mentorships!

FREELANCERS AND EVENT HELPERS

If you are unable to commit to at least one full year as a volunteer mentor, LYF also requires freelancers and event helpers for all our events. In 2022 we are specifically recruiting for these positions, as they are essential to the successful operation of our program.

FREELANCERS

  • Assist with running activities for our teens at LYF events (we require a certain number of freelancers for every Big Day Out, and camp);
  • Step up to mentor a teen if their usual mentor needs some time out or is unable to attend at the last minute;
  • Provide essential support (e.g. teen pick-ups, logistics, extra supervision) to LYF's committee, teens and other volunteers.

EVENT HELPERS

As a charity we are always looking for ways to make our dollar go further, which means taking on the majority of event planning and execution ourselves.

Our event helpers:

  • Help with the planning of camp and Big Days Out (e.g. attend a busy bee, pick up supplies, liaise with vendors);
  • Assist with event set up and pack down;
  • Help with cooking and serving lunch at Big Days Out;
  • May assist with running activities for our teens if required.

During the application process you will be able to select which role(s) you are interested in and indicate preferences.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
