ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Jesuit Social Services’ Settlement Program helps to improve social interaction, build capacity and foster a sense of belonging for newly arrived people. Our staff work with eligible refugees and vulnerable migrants living in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. Activities in our Settlement Program include casework and community development.

Transitional Housing Program

  • One of our activities is providing support for newly arrived refugees and migrants living in transitional housing, through the Salvation Army Housing Victoria (SAHV).

OUTLINE OF VOLUNTEER'S SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Communicating with participants in order to understand their housing goals and needs, and other circumstances relevant for a housing plan development
  • Assisting participants to implement their transitional housing exit plan by providing support to: o Complete and follow up on public housing applications o Search and apply for affordable and private rental accommodation o Understand the technological platforms and the processes required in the submission of various housing applications (one-to-one or through group work)
  • Providing support to participants to effectively interact with transitional housing provider regarding maintenance requests, and understand and fulfil obligations as a tenant
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation to support good practice and accountability

CONFIRMED VOLUNTEERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO:

  • Have understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services
  • A commitment to a minimum of 6 months volunteering, with time commitment of one day (or two half days) per week
  • Experience or understanding of the housing system or broader social welfare system
  • Ability to provide culturally appropriate support and interact with participants in a way that is inclusive and respectful
  • Comply with relevant legislation including Jesuit Social Services policies and procedure
