From the summer of 2021 until June 2022, Travellers Aid will be offering a service to assist people to attend events, attractions and activities that they enjoy in the community.

Travellers Aid service users include people with a permanent disability, temporary impairment or those with age-related mobility challenges who require assistance when travelling. This service may also be offered to carers as well as care recipients.

Travellers Aid’s new Participation Assistance Service will be offered in metropolitan Melbourne and across regional Victoria in areas accessible by public transport. Activities may include a trip to a regional town to enjoy a gallery visit, a footy game at the MCG, a visit to the Queen Victoria Markets or a triobike ride along the Yarra.

What is the type of person we are looking for?

• Flexible and adaptable to any given situation.
• Able to work independently/unsupervised.
• Ability to respond respectfully to the needs of the service user.
• Flexible availability.
• Excellent communication skills.

A day in the life of a Participation Assistance Volunteer

• Volunteers will provide participation assistance in the form of companionship, mobility assistance, personal guidance on public transport and in the community.

Participation Volunteers will be required to:

• Meet services users at a pre-arranged location.
• Travel by public transport to the event, attraction or activity of their choice.
• Assist with mobility challenges, such as pushing a wheelchair or guiding a person with vision impairment.
• Assisting the service user to engage in the activity or attraction.
• Travel on the return journey if required.
• No personal care tasks are required for this role
• If interested, volunteers proficient in cycling may also offer a ride on the Travellers Aid trio bike (training provided).
• Based at public spaces and events within the City of Melbourne and regional Victoria.
