Community Bushlands Garden Assistant

York Branch Wildflower Society of WA

Our group, the York Branch of the Wildflower Society of WA, has been active for almost twenty years. Our mission is to encourage an awareness of our beautiful local flora and the benefits of water wise gardens in our hot and dry summer climate.
The bush land garden we have developed in York covers a vacant house block and includes over 400 species of plants native to WA. We also maintain a ‘seed orchard’, which is a strip of land along the Avon River, owned by the Shire of York. We have planted species from which we harvest seed for propagation. And here’s where you come in. These areas, like any gardens, require a lot of maintenance: weeding, pruning, planting, installing paths and other features. We need an enthusiastic plant lover to share the load. If you can spare 5-10 hours per week and you don’t mind some physical work, this could be the gig for you. You would be working alongside our members each Tues morning for 2 hours, either in the Garden or seed orchard, and on other days in the seed orchard for 2-4 hours. It’s not all work though. During Spring and Summer we like to do wildflower walks in the local Reserves so that we can see what’s flowering and what might be suitable to propagate – you would be part of that. According to your level of interest we can train you in propagation techniques and expand your knowledge of the local flora.
