Volunteer Pyjama Angel - Townsville

The Pyjama Foundation Townsville

The Pyjama Foundation supports the dreams of kids living in out-of-home care. Whether they want to grow up to be an astronaut or a doctor, The Pyjama Foundation is here to help them reach their potential by assisting them with their learning and providing consistent love and support. With a little confidence and encouragement, who knows what these incredible kids can achieve.

Through the 'Love Of Learning Program' volunteers called Pyjama Angels are recruited, screened and trained before being matched with a child in care to spend time with once a week, focusing on learning-based activities. In that one hour per week, they demonstrate that the child is valued and loved.

Every placement will be different. We're looking for volunteers who can commit to our Love of Learning Program for one hour per week for a minimum of 12 months.
Depending on the age of the child you may do painting, playdough, home readers, assist with homework, cooking, arts & craft activities or play games outdoors. The most important task is to turn up every week for your visit.

To be eligible to be a Volunteer Pyjama Angel, you must:

  • Be willing to make an initial minimum commitment of at least 12 months
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have basic English language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Possess a love of learning and the ability to create a fun filled environment
  • Be willing to acquire and maintain a valid Working with Children check
  • Understand and respect confidentiality
  • Have your own transport (not completely necessary, but will determine ability to be placed with a child)
  • Visit your allocated child, for an hour once a week in their home
  • Display traits of resilience, including the capacity to make realistic plans; have a positive view of yourself; confidence in your strengths and abilities; have skills in communication and problem solving

All volunteers must undertake the screening process to ascertain their suitability to fulfill the role of a Pyjama Angel. The process involves completing the application, a face-to-face interview, referee checks and training.

You must also display:

  • A love of reading, playing games, puzzles, arts & crafts or outdoor games
  • Have great communication skills and flexibility to work in with the foster carer's schedule

Our volunteers are aged from 18 to 80 and come from a variety of backgrounds including retirees, pilots, doctors, teachers, mums & dads and uni students. Some of our volunteers have been visiting the same child for 10 years, over this length of time a very special bond is formed and the rewards are beneficial to both the child and pyjama angel.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
