Conference Members

Who: Volunteers who are seeking to support their community in many different ways (through the provision of food, financial aid and other services).

What is a Member: The primary focus of a member is to help with the immediate needs of people identified in their community as requiring a "hand-up", by looking to address longer-term needs as well as immediate ones.

The role involves the development of a genuine connection with each person seeking assistance to get a clearer indication of the person's situation so that ways to assist more effectively can be developed. It is equally important, to offer friendship and conversation.

As a Member you also may be able to offer advice or referrals to other external services such as: • Homelessness services • Disaster relief • Mobile and fixed meal services • Migrant and refugee services • Housing support and emergency accommodation • Mentoring and social support programs • Advocacy • Youth programs – including family, teen, and kids • Budget counselling • Material assistance

When: In terms of a time commitment, we ask for approximately 1-2 hours per week for call-outs. We also require Members to attend a monthly conference meeting which lasts for up to 2 hours.

Please note: Associate Membership is also available, the difference being that attendance at meetings is not a requirement.

Requirements: No formal experience is required, however if you have excellent communication skills, compassion in abundance and a real drive for making change in your community we would love to hear from you. A Working with Children’s Check and Police Check is required before you commence, arranged and paid for by St Vincent de Paul. St Vincent de Paul will assist you in acquiring these checks.

We are looking for people with. • A passion for helping others and giving back to your local community • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills • Basic administration skills are desirable • An ability to build rapport in a respectful manner with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures • The ability to act with empathy and without judgement • Capacity to ‘think on your feet’ - remaining focused, calm and motivated in unexpected situations and unfamiliar environments • Someone looking to join a supportive, like-minded and committed team of volunteers who make a real difference in the lives of people in your community

We can offer you... • Initial and ongoing training opportunities • Hands on experience with a respected not-for-profit organisation in the field of welfare and administration • The opportunity to build lifelong friendships with other volunteers • How do I apply? Please use the form below to apply and be a part of something both exciting and meaningful! You will then be contacted by one of our local volunteer leaders who can guide you through the process of becoming a member.

Learn more about our conferences. The St Vincent de Paul Society (the Society) is a lay Catholic organisation that aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.

Society members are passionate about helping those in need in their local community and work together in groups known as 'Conferences' that are usually attached to; parishes, schools, universities, social groups, workplaces, or groups of individuals from the local area.

The Society would not exist without its members and volunteers; they are the Society. They support their neighbour’s by visiting people in their homes or in the community, providing friendship and support to those they serve and each other. They are called to seek out and support the marginalised wherever they may be.
