About us

Come and volunteer with our international development organisation, working to eradicate avoidable blindness. Currently operating in over 25 countries throughout Australia, the Pacific, Africa, South Asia and South East Asia, The Foundation has restored sight to over two million people worldwide. We have an ambitious five year strategic plan that aims to take The Foundation even closer to realising our vision of a world in which no person is needlessly blind and Indigenous Australians exercise their right to good health.

The Volunteer Role and Duties

Volunteering with the Social Justice and Regional Engagement Team, you’ll be assisting with conducting desktop based research from your home via web searches (google, bing etc.), internal FHF Documentation, articles and blogs etc. on the topics of;

  • The work Professor Fred Hollows and The Fred Hollows Foundation has done to support the right to health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

  • The Current Political Landscape regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

  • Helping find contacts for Subject Matter Experts in particular areas of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

  • collating this information above into guidance documents for internal guidance and external communications.

The volunteer will also assist with;

  • assisting with drafting materials such as reports, submissions and other internal communications

  • assisting with preparation of meetings and other minor administration tasks where required, and volunteer is available and happy to do so.

This is a 12 month role at 2 days a week, on a flexible basis as long as the volunteer is able to help at least 2 days a week.

Required Skills and Experience

The volunteer we would love for this role;

  • Has graduated or is currently studying Public Health, Indigenous Studies, Social Development, International Relations, Community Development, Research or other related fields, and who has Demonstrated competency in Research and written reporting

  • Is passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Equality and Culture

  • Has an interest in Health and Research

  • Is technically competent in using computers, to do internet searches, and be able to use Microsoft office suite and videoconferencing software (Microsoft Teams)

  • Is confident and able to speak on phones, via video call and via email

  • Has sound organisation and task management skills, and is task focused and proactive

  • Is willing to try new things

  • Is willing to comply with The Foundation's screening requirements for child protection, including a police background check and some online training modules.

  • Having a background in working with Indigenous people or in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation and Experience in health policy or Indigenous policy work and experience in writing communications (e.g Blog posts) is an advantage but not essential.
