Social Support Volunteers

Researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University are seeking volunteers to provide support to frail, hospitalised older adults as part of a study in collaboration with Hollywood Private Hospital.

The study will determine the effectiveness of using nurse-led volunteer support interventions in reducing the progression of frailty. For each patient the project nurse will develop an individualised volunteer care plan in consultation with ward staff and the patient. Volunteer support may include assistance with eating and drinking, exercising, walking assistance and social and cognitive stimulation, such as reading newspapers and participating in (word) games, depending on the individual patient’s needs. The support provided by volunteers will complement but not replace the care provided by nursing, medical and allied health staff.

Ideally, we would like our volunteers to be able to commit to one typical shift period of four hours each week (Monday to Friday, usually within 8am-12pm or within 1pm-6pm), preferably for the 9 months the project will run (March to November/December 2021).

Volunteers will interact one-on-one with patients under the guidance of the project nurse. The role will suit volunteers seeking interaction with patients and experience in a hospital setting.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
