  • Scientific evidence has supported the powerful effect human touch and interaction can have on development and recovery from illness, however in our busy hospital environment, nurses are often so busy performing clinical duties that other tasks such as play can be forgotten or are just not possible to fit in. On arrival at the unit, check with nursing desk to see if there are children who might benefit from some company.

  • Under supervision of nursing staff, volunteers will provide care in the form of providing a soothing environment which may include singing, reading, playing with and talking to the baby or child. This may include holding the baby and rocking gently to sleep.

  • Upon guidance from a nurse: provide comfort to patients in the absence of parents/guardians: console, hold “cuddle”, stable infants under direct supervision of infant’s nurse

  • Supporting families on discharge, collecting belongings and escorting to their car

National Police Clearance, DCSI Working with Children check are required. Whooping Cough & any additional Immunisations if required will be discussed and be provided at the hospital.
