Southern Migrant & Refugee Centre(SMRC)

The Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) is a not for profit organisation. SMRC was established in 1993 and is governed by Board of Directors. The SMRC provides a range of community based services for migrants and refugees in the South Eastern Region.

The SMRC staff members and volunteers work closely with migrant and refugee communities, leaders, service networks and organisations, local government and business. It is the responsibility of all staff and volunteers to represent the organisation as a professional and client focused organisation and promote its range of services and programs.

As a volunteer at SMRC, you will be welcomed into a successful and professional organisation with 30 years of success. You will gain a variety of experiences, meet interesting people from a range of different backgrounds and be part of a team environment providing support to refugee and migrant families.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Dandenong location, Wednesdays from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm.
  • Collecting/processing attendance payments and attendance sheet.
  • Providing information to current and new participants.
  • Ensuring that the sewing machines are maintained and in working order.
  • Data entry.
  • Other activities as directed by the Program Coordinator.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent data entry skills including accuracy and efficiency. · Excellent customer service skills. · Excellent spoken and written English. · Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity towards the needs of refugee and migrants. · Ability and experience in communicating effectively with people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. · Reliable, dependable and respectful of confidentiality. · Able to use initiative and to work unsupervised or as part of a team. · Flexible, ready to take on a variety of tasks including learning how to maintain sewing machines and other equipment. · Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
