Brunswick Neighbourhood House is looking for an additional Lead Cook to run our Community Lunches. Lunches are free for community members, and are made from surplus food provided by Open Table. The Lead Cook will set the menu and manage the volunteer cooks to deliver a meal for between 20-50 people. Wek are looking for a Cook for the second Thursday of each month from June to December. Dates as follows: Thursday 8th June, Thursday 13th July, Thursday 10th August, Thursday 14th September, Thursday 12th October, Thursday 9th November, Thursday 14th December. Times are 9am-2pm

The Lead Cook is responsible for coordinating the preparation and service of a lunch using vegetarian ingredients. This includes kitchen set-up, meal preparation and kitchen clean-up.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Kitchen Set-up and Ingredient delivery ● Liaise with the Event Coordinator to coordinate sundry purchases as required to ensure efficient operation of events

Meal Preparation ● Plan a menu based on available (vegetarian) ingredients ● Together with kitchen hand volunteers, prepare dishes as per the menu ● Instruct, supervise and coordinate volunteers throughout the meal preparation and service processes ● Oversee adherence to food safety standards and sanitation practices

Kitchen Clean-up ● Coordinate volunteers to assist in kitchen clean-up to ensure the kitchen is left clean and tidy, with property securely stored in designated area

Other ● Engage with all volunteers and attendees to ensure they feel welcome and supported ● Notify the Event Coordinator immediately if any serious incident occurs or concerns arise ● Comply with all relevant BNH policies and procedures

SELECTION CRITERIA

Knowledge and Skills ● Excellent cooking skills, and in particular the ability to devise and cook a menu based on whatever (limited) ingredients are available on the day ● A proficiency in the preparation of large quantities of food ● Strong planning and organisational skills, and in particular demonstrated time-management skills in preparing and serving meals in limited time frames ● Knowledge of statutory safe food handling and preparation requirements ● Competence in coordinating and supervising others ● Demonstrated capacity to work in a team setting ● A knowledge of good dietary practices ● Commitment to working in the community sector ● Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability and willingness to relate to people from different cultures

Desirable ● Safe Food Handling Certificate ● Creativity in planning interesting and varied menus based on available ingredients ● Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of food systems and food insecurity ● Experience in the community sector working with CALD people ● Ability to cope with limited resources, seize opportunities and think creatively
