The Public Advocate is an independent statutory officer appointed under the Guardianship and Administration Act 1990 to promote and protect the rights of adults with decision-making disabilities to reduce their risk of neglect, exploitation and abuse. In protecting their rights and dignity, the Public Advocate: provides information, advice and training on guardianship, administration, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Enduring Powers of Guardianship and protecting vulnerable adults; advocates for adults with decision-making disabilities; investigates concerns about the abuse, neglect or exploitation of adults with decision-making disabilities; reports to the State Administrative Tribunal on whether a guardian or administrator is required; provides guardianship services when appointed by the State Administrative Tribunal; conducts a community guardianship program.
